Nigeria Wins 5th Straight Women’s AfroBasket Trophy


Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, made history on Sunday night by winning their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket championship.

Dockaysworld reports that the Nigerian team defeated Mali 78–64 in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

With this victory, D’Tigress became the first team in African basketball history to claim five AfroBasket titles in a row. The win also brings Nigeria’s total AfroBasket titles to seven.

In the game, the D’Tigress recovered from an early setback to take control in the latter stages. Mali edged the first quarter 26–21, but Nigeria won the second quarter 20–15 to tie the score at 41–41 by halftime.

Emerging from the break, the defending champions took command of the third quarter, outscoring Mali 20–15 once again to seize a five-point lead. In the final stretch, D’Tigress put the result beyond doubt, dominating the fourth quarter 17–8 to close out the game in convincing fashion.

The result extends Nigeria’s unbeaten run in the AfroBasket tournament to 29 games since 2015.
