Veteran Nigerian highlife musician Mike Ejeagha has died at the age of 95.
He passed away on Friday night in Enugu, after an illness.
His death was confirmed by his son, Emma, who said the music icon died around 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital.
Ejeagha, often called “Gentleman Mike,” was known for his deep connection to Igbo culture through music.
Born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, Enugu State, he began his music journey decades ago and gained wide recognition between the 1960s and 1980s.
His songs, such as Omekagu, Uwa Mgbede Ka Mma, and Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche, remain classics today.
Throughout his career, Ejeagha focused on blending storytelling with melody, creating a unique style that touched the hearts of listeners across different age groups.
His work helped preserve traditional Igbo values, and more than 300 of his songs are now kept in the National Archives of Nigeria.
His music recently found new fans when a dance challenge featuring his 1983 song Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche (Gwogwogwongwo) went viral in 2024.
This brought renewed attention to his work from a younger generation.
