Nigerian senator confirms impeachment plot against Akpabio

The Nigerian Senate has thwarted a plot to remove Senate President Godswill Akpabio from office.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu made the disclosure while speaking to newsmen.

The attempt was reportedly driven by a group of dissatisfied lawmakers from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition.

The plot was neutralised before it could gain momentum.

Kalu, former governor of Abia State and chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, said the move was stopped to preserve unity and stability in the 10th Senate.

He said, “Though there were attempts, we didn’t allow that to happen. That is why I always say we are one big family, and it is not going to happen. The Senate is united behind its leadership.

“Whatever the problem is, the Senate is more interested in making laws that will help President Tinubu overcome the economic difficulties our people are going through. We are more interested in the people. The legislations we are making are pro-people, and we are focused on ensuring Nigerians can eat three times a day.”

Sources indicated that some senators were unhappy with committee appointments and limited consultation on sensitive matters, including budget and national security issues, which fueled the discontent.

Tensions within the Senate had been growing for weeks, especially after a July 2025 disagreement between Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele over procedural decisions, including the timing of the annual recess.

Akpabio, who became Senate President in June 2023 with backing from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and party leaders, has faced criticism from colleagues concerned that the Senate’s independence might be compromised.

Kalu and other senior senators, including Ali Ndume, Ahmad Lawan, and Adams Oshiomhole, reportedly intervened to calm the situation, urging unity and warning that a leadership crisis could harm the Senate’s work and public perception.
