The governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has told his newly sworn-in commissioners that anyone not wearing the “Asiwaju cap” will not be allowed into Executive Council meetings.
Okpebholo gave the directive during the swearing-in ceremony of the commissioners in Benin City on Tuesday, where he charged them to uphold discipline and teamwork in the discharge of their duties.
The governor’s comment, which drew laughter from the audience, has since attracted political interpretation. The “Asiwaju cap” is a trademark of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Okpebholo’s remark is seen by observers as a show of alignment with the president’s leadership.
The governor has in the past pledged to deliver Edo State to the APC in the 2027 presidential election.
His remark comes on the heels of a similar statement by the Akwa Ibom State governor months ago, who cautioned cabinet members unwilling to join the ruling party with him to step aside.
