A fire has once again broken out at the popular Oba Market in Benin City, Edo State, destroying part of the busy marketplace on Wednesday night.
According to estimates, traders lost goods worth millions of naira as they were unable to salvage anything while the inferno raged.
The fire service reportedly arrived eventually but were unable to quench the flames before huge damage had been done.
Recall, the market had earlier been razed during the tenure of former Governor Godwin Obaseki and is currently being rebuilt under the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The chairman of Oredo Local Government Area, Hon. Gabriel Iduseri, visited the scene early Thursday morning for an assessment. He expressed sympathy for the affected traders and promised that the government would support them through the difficult time.
“This is a painful situation for our traders who rely on this market to survive. We will make sure they don’t face this loss alone,” Iduseri assured.
