The Governor Monday Okpebholo led Edo state government has issued a one-week ultimatum to immediate past deputy governor, Godwin Omobayo, to return all government property still in his possession or risk arrest.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the government said Omobayo had yet to return several official items, including vehicles, documents, and other assets assigned to him during his tenure.
The statement noted that the government had earlier sent reminders to the former deputy governor but the items were still being withheld.
It warned that failure to comply within the stipulated seven days would lead to legal action and possible arrest.
Recall that Godwin Omobayo became deputy governor in April 2024 following the impeachment of his predecessor, Philip Shaibu, by the Edo State House of Assembly after months of political tension with then-Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The Edo State Government restated its seriousness to accountability and the protection of public property, stating that no individual, regardless of previous office or political affiliation, would be allowed to unlawfully retain state assets.
The statement read in part:
“The continued retention of such property by any individual constitutes a clear breach of public trust and unlawful possession of state assets. Accordingly, Mr. Omobayo is hereby given a period of seven days from the date of this release to comply fully by returning all government property under his custody to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.”
“Failure to comply within the stipulated period will compel the state government to direct the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, to effect his arrest and ensure the immediate recovery of all state assets still in his possession through lawful means.”
“This administration, under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, will continue to uphold the principles of transparency, discipline, and integrity in public service, ensuring that all public officers are held to the highest standards of responsibility and probity.”
“The government urges Mr. Omobayo to comply with the directive and avoid actions that could invite consequences or further embarrassment.”
