Governor Monday Okpebholo has relieved his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Fred Itua, of his duties, days after the alleged assault on EBS journalist Juliet Enabulele by an associate of the governor at Government House.
In a government announcement seen by Dockaysworld on Thursday, the Edo State Government confirmed the appointment of Dr. Ebojele Akhere Patrick as the new Chief Press Secretary.
The statement did not directly reference the assault incident but said the change was aimed at strengthening communication between the government and the public.
Sources familiar with the matter have however stated that the Mr Itua’s handling of the alleged assault by Ebo stone at the government house contributed to his dismissal.
Dr. Ebojele, a journalist, public administrator, researcher and lecturer, brings decades of media experience to the role.
He previously served as Edo/Delta Correspondent for Channels Television and held correspondent positions with New Nigerian Newspaper, Champion Newspaper and Comet Newspapers.
According to the statement, his appointment is intended to ensure “clarity, transparency, and effective dissemination” of government policies and activities.
Mr. Itua will await reassignment, the government added, expressing appreciation for his service.
Meanwhile Okungbowa, a political associate within the Okpebholo circle has since tendered an apology to the NUJ Edo state council.
Many have however condemned the NUJ chairman’s acceptance of an apology that wasn’t delivered to the victim.
