The Deputy Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Abayomi Akinruntan, has resigned from his position.
He said his decision was to follow the usual practice of sharing elective roles fairly across the state.
Akinruntan, who represents Ilaje Constituency 1 and is the son of the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom, had been serving as deputy speaker since June 2023 when he was elected by members of the Assembly.
His resignation letter was read during a House session by the Assembly Clerk, Benjamin Jayeiola, although Akinruntan was absent at the time.
Following his resignation, Ololade Gbegude, the lawmaker for Okitipupa Constituency 2, was nominated and confirmed as the new deputy speaker without any opposition.
He was sworn in and promised to fulfill his duties diligently.
At the same time, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, also stepped down.
Olatunji Oshati from Ose Constituency was named the new Majority Leader.
In addition, Muritala Sulaiman from Akoko South East became the Chief Whip, while Fabiyi Olatunji of Odigbo Constituency 1 was appointed as the Whip.
The Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, acknowledged the peaceful and smooth transition, appreciating the former deputy speaker and majority leader for their cooperation.
