Nigerian Governors Declare Public Holiday In Honour Of Buhari


The Northwest Governors’ Forum, led by Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, announced today that Tuesday, July 15, 2025, will be a public holiday in all seven states of the region.

This decision honors the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a hospital in the United Kingdom .

In the official statement, Governor Radda expressed profound sorrow, calling Buhari a “father, leader, and source of pride” for the Northwest.

He praised him for his selfless service, integrity, and patriotic sacrifice .

The holiday will allow citizens in Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, and Zamfara States to pay their respects.

Buhari’s remains are scheduled to be flown to his hometown in Katsina by noon on Tuesday, with burial prayers and interment taking place at 2:00 PM, following Islamic rites .

The Governors’ Forum urged all Nigerians to unite in prayer for Buhari’s soul, and Radda extended condolences to President Bola Tinubu, Buhari’s family, and all Nigerians affected by the loss.

He also prayed that Allah grants Buhari Aljanah Firdaus and gives strength to the nation .

Muhammadu Buhari, aged 82, served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.

He remains a significant and polarizing figure in Nigeria’s political history .
