A faction of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, is demanding President Bola Tinubu’s impeachment following his public admission of a close relationship with the contractor handling the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
The group alleges a conflict of interest, saying the president effectively gave a federal contract to a business associate without proper public bidding.
During the launch of the first section of the project, President Tinubu described Gilbert Chagoury, the head of Hitech Construction Company, as his “partner in daring.”
This statement has sparked controversy, as Hitech is not only in charge of the highway project but also responsible for developing the high-end Eko Atlantic City, an area critics claim the road directly serves.
Oba Oladipo Olaitan, leader of the Afenifere faction, accused the president of prioritising personal business interests, insisting that the road project is simply a means to boost the value of Eko Atlantic, a private development.
He said there was no open bidding process, and only a small portion of the road leading directly to Atlantic City has been commissioned so far.
He argued this shows the rest of the project may never be completed.
Olaitan urged the National Assembly to begin impeachment proceedings, accusing Tinubu of breaching public trust and misusing federal resources.
He warned that failure to act would reflect badly on the lawmakers and raise questions about their independence and integrity.
In response, the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress dismissed the call as baseless.
Party spokesperson Seye Oladejo said the president’s remarks were being deliberately twisted.
According to him, Tinubu’s use of the word “partner” was symbolic, referring to shared vision and courage, not a business relationship.
He insisted the contract was awarded through proper channels and urged critics to follow due process if they had genuine concerns.
Despite the political tensions, the presidency has not yet issued an official statement regarding the allegations.
