Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has made it clear he will not leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), even though some members, including governors, are defecting.
Speaking at the inauguration of the PDP’s new South West zonal executive in Ibadan, he said the party will stay committed to the people, no matter the political shifts happening around them.
Makinde told supporters not to worry about the defections, stating that the real issue affecting Nigerians is hunger.
He joked that only when hunger “decamps” to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should they start worrying.
According to him, it’s the struggling citizens who will decide the outcome of the 2027 elections, not politicians jumping parties.
He defended the PDP’s strength, saying the party has maintained its structure and unity despite losing power at the federal level in 2015.
Makinde said the PDP continues to build institutions and hold meetings regularly, unlike the APC, which he claimed barely holds internal congresses or meetings.
Reaffirming his commitment, Makinde promised full support for the newly elected zonal executives, working alongside Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Adeleke also praised the new leadership and encouraged them to work toward unity, peace, and inclusion.
Kamorudeen Ajisafe, the newly inaugurated PDP National Vice Chairman (South West), promised to lead efforts to reconcile members and win more seats in the future.
He also said the South West would play a major role in the party’s push to reclaim the presidency in 2027.
Former Ogun State PDP gubernatorial candidate, Ladi Adebutu, thanked both Makinde and Adeleke for ensuring a peaceful election and called on members to stay united.
The event was attended by key party leaders from across the South West.
