Three senators from Osun State, Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East), Dr. Olalere Oyewumi (Osun West), and Olubiyi Fadeyi (Osun Central) have asked President Bola Tinubu to help resolve the ongoing political crisis affecting local government areas in the state.
In a joint letter, the lawmakers, all elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urged the president to act as a neutral figure and step in without regard to party loyalties, as the conflict continues to affect ordinary citizens, especially those at the grassroots.
The senators praised the court rulings on the matter but insisted that President Tinubu’s intervention, using dialogue and peaceful negotiation, would be the best way to settle the dispute.
They added that Tinubu’s long-standing democratic values make him the right person to mediate the crisis and restore political harmony in Osun.
They also appealed to influential individuals in the state , traditional rulers, elder statesmen, and prominent citizens to join in urging the president to act swiftly.
The crisis began in February after a Court of Appeal ruling allowed local government officials elected in 2022 (all from the All Progressives Congress, APC) to return to office.
This decision led to violent clashes with PDP members, resulting in the deaths of six people in various locations.
Following the violence, council workers have boycotted their duties under the directive of the local chapter of the workers’ union, NULGE.
The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission later conducted a fresh local government election in February 2025, producing new officials under the PDP.
With both parties claiming legitimacy, the state’s local government allocations have been withheld, and the state government has taken the matter to the Supreme Court.
