Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reacted to reports of sexual assault linked to a local festival in Ozoro, Delta State, describing the development as a reflection of misplaced national priorities.
In a statement, Obi stressed the need for Nigeria to refocus on human capital development, particularly the empowerment of women, rather than allowing harmful practices to persist.
“Rather than emulating these nations by investing in our women… our focus drifts toward trivialities such as the Ozoro festival, a development that reflects poorly on our national priorities,” he said.
The reaction comes as authorities intensify investigations into the incident, with police already making arrests.
Recall Dockaysworld reported that the suspected chief organiser and five others were arrested, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further probe.
He noted that countries like Indonesia and Bangladesh have achieved significant economic growth by integrating women into key sectors, adding that Nigeria must adopt similar strategies to drive inclusive development.
Obi argued that women, who make up over half of Nigeria’s population, remain underutilised, despite their proven contributions to economic growth and leadership globally.
“If we redirect our priorities, invest in our people, and harness the potential of our women in critical sectors, we can rebuild our nation on a foundation of productivity and inclusion,” he stated.
He concluded by urging a shift toward policies that empower women and promote national development, saying, “With the right priorities and actions, a new Nigeria is possible.”
