Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, Mr. Peter Obi, has denied issuing any statement confirming his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Dockaysworld reports that the clarification was made in a statement released on Tuesday through his media aide, Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR).
The statement disowned a message purportedly attributed to him. The message had claimed he dismissed reports of joining the PDP while affirming his loyalty to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has been made aware of a purported statement from our principal, Peter Obi, denying joining the Peoples Democratic Party and reaffirming his commitment to the African Democratic Congress,” the clarification read.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, described the circulating message as false and misleading, reiterating that any official position on his political moves would come solely from his verified communication channels.
“Peter Obi has been unequivocal in his position in the ongoing coalition and doesn’t need anyone to put words into his mouth,” the statement said. “He would not accept anybody attributing a statement to him just to satisfy their devious agenda.”
The media office further cautioned the public to ignore unofficial statements, noting that only messages disseminated through Obi’s official handle or media team should be regarded as credible.
The clarification follows speculation about Obi’s possible return to the PDP. The rumour gained traction after former Borno State Governor and chieftain of the ruling APC, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, claimed in a recent television interview that Obi was preparing to rejoin the PDP to contest the 2027 presidential election.
“As far as this politics is concerned, they (ADC) don’t exist. The information available to me is that any moment from now, Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP,” Sheriff stated during an appearance on Channels Television.
Obi placed third in the 2023 presidential race.
