Former 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has joined protesters at the National Assembly in Abuja over the Senate’s refusal to approve mandatory electronic transmission of election results.
The protest began on Monday morning as demonstrators gathered at the National Assembly complex to reject the Senate’s decision.
Speaking at the protest ground, Obi who’s a a key figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) criticised lawmakers for blocking the move and urged them to allow elections to run without interference.
He said, “Allow the election to go through the normal process. Whatever the outcome is, we will accept it. Why introduce confusion after the process?”
The protest, tagged “Occupy National Assembly,” drew Nigerian youths and pro-democracy groups who said electronic transmission of results is necessary for free and fair elections.
Security was tight at the venue, with officers from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) deployed around the complex.
The protesters called on the National Assembly to reverse its decision, insisting that electronic transmission would improve transparency, credibility, and public trust in the electoral system.
