The Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Delta State Police Command, have arrested a security guard as primary suspect in the killing of retired High Court judge, Justice Ifeoma Okogwu.
Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe confirmed the arrest in a statement issued in Warri on Sunday.
He said operatives, acting on intelligence, apprehended 25-year-old Godwin Mngumi, the gateman attached to the judge and alleged to have carried out the attack.
Mngumi was arrested in Anambra State, where police also recovered the late judge’s mobile phone.
Investigators said he invited his friend, Nnaji Obalum, and another accomplice still at large, to the residence on the night the crime was committed.
Obalum has been arrested, while a manhunt for the third suspect is ongoing.
Justice Okogwu, a former judicial officer from Asaba, was found dead in her home on November 23 under disturbing circumstances.
Her hands and feet were bound, and the house was ransacked, indicating a violent and targeted attack.
The killing has heightened tension in the state capital, especially after the night guard assigned to the residence disappeared immediately after the incident.
Family members said they were informed of her death the following morning and described the guard’s disappearance as a major red flag.
They also said they have provided police with details of the private security firm responsible for assigning guards to the home.
The morning guard has been detained, and the owner of the security company has been invited for questioning as investigations continue.
