The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia South Senatorial Zone has formally merged with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), bringing its entire structure in the zone under the new platform.
The development was made public in Aba during a meeting between the zonal leaders of APGA and the state leadership of the ADC.
The Abia South zonal chairman of APGA, Chief Charles Nwanyanwu, led the defection alongside six local government chairmen and thousands of party members.
Nwanyanwu explained that the move followed persistent leadership crises that, according to him, weakened APGA in Abia.
He said that the party, which once had strong representation in the state assembly, has now lost all presence in the legislature.
He added that members from Abia North and Abia Central are also preparing to join the ADC.
He stressed that over 5,000 APGA members in Abia South endorsed the decision, describing it as a collective choice to embrace a party they believe has stronger prospects in the state.
Receiving the defectors, the ADC state chairman, Don Norman Obinna, assured them of full integration.
He maintained that ADC is now gaining wide acceptance in Abia, attracting politicians who seek a platform for good governance.
According to him, the party already has hundreds of thousands of registered members and is preparing to be a dominant force in the next elections.
Obinna added that any politician who ignores the growing strength of the ADC risks being left behind in future contests.
