Dr Akin Ogunbiyi, a former governorship candidate of the Accord Party in the 2022 Osun election, has officially declared his intention to contest in the 2026 gubernatorial election under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at his declaration event in Ile-Ogbo on Saturday, Ogunbiyi addressed concerns about the growing number of aspirants in the party, insisting that the APC remains united and that the selection method for the party’s candidate will be determined by its leadership at the appropriate time.
He downplayed the idea that multiple aspirants could cause division within the party, stating that having many contenders is not a problem as long as they all remain committed to the party’s goal of winning the governorship seat.
According to him, the method of selecting the APC’s candidate whether through primaries or another process will be a decision made by the party leaders when the time comes.
Ogunbiyi added that defections should not be considered by any aspirant who may not secure the party’s ticket, calling it “unthinkable.”
He said all the declared and potential aspirants share a common progressive ideology and are focused on ensuring unity within the party.
He added that all the aspirants know each other and are determined to work together for the party’s success.
He described President Bola Tinubu as a true democrat and said the number of aspirants whether twenty or fifty does not matter as long as the party remains focused and united.
Ogunbiyi concluded by saying that while he is keeping the details of his political plans private for now, he will engage supporters as the race progresses.
