The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has filed fresh charges against human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, Dockaysworld reports.
Court documents indicate that Sowore is scheduled to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
Meanwhile, a source familiar with the proceedings confirmed that the charges have been duly filed and that an arraignment date has been fixed.
This latest move comes amid an ongoing rift between Sowore and the police. It can be recalled that his passport remains under court seizure as part of earlier proceedings. In January 2025, he faced 17 counts of cybercrime offences, all tied to his repeated public reference to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as “illegal.”
Those charges were based on a video clip and multiple social media posts in which Sowore accused the police chief of occupying the position unlawfully, citing what he described as an unconstitutional extension of Egbetokun’s tenure beyond the statutory retirement age of 60.
Egbetokun, who reached the age limit in September 2024, was granted an extension following an amendment to the Police Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, a decision Sowore has repeatedly condemned.
In July 2025, Sowore led a protest in Abuja alongside retired police officers, demanding improved pensions for the retirees and the removal of the Nigeria Police from the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Following the protest, Sowore was summoned by the police and held for over 48 hours at the Force Headquarters in Abuja before being released on Friday night.
