Former Benue State governor, Gabriel Suswam, has revealed the reason behind his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the party as a new and credible platform to rebuild Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Suswam spoke on Tuesday during a meeting with senior members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the Makurdi home of Terngu Tsegba, who serves as the Chairman of the Benue State Steering Committee of the National Coalition Movement.
At the meeting, which brought together five elders from each of Benue’s 23 local government areas, preparations were made for the official launch of ADC in the state.
According to Suswam, his move to the ADC is driven by the urgent need for a people-centered political alternative that can stand up to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He told the gathering that the ADC now belongs to the people, just as the PDP once did when it gained popularity among ordinary citizens.
He explained that this new platform offers a fresh opportunity to build a strong and united opposition.
“In the same way PDP was handed to the local people, the ADC is hereby given to the people for full ownership. It is now their platform,” Suswam said.
He spoke on the importance of inclusive participation in politics and cautioned against political imposition, urging party leaders to allow citizens to freely express themselves within the new structure.
Suswam also encouraged members to revive the same energy and unity that once led the PDP to major electoral victories and channel that spirit into building the ADC.
He made it clear that joining the ADC should be a voluntary decision, not something forced on anyone, stating, that joining the ADC is a matter of choice and not by coercion.
