The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike from 12:00 a.m. on April 7, 2026, over the Federal Government’s alleged plan to halt the Professional Allowance Table (PAT).
NARD President, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, described the move as “unfortunate,” saying, “The National Executive Council was informed about the Federal Government’s decision to remove the Professional Allowance Table.”
“Following extensive deliberations, the NEC resolved to embark on a total industrial and comprehensive strike,” he added.
The dispute stems from a 2025 agreement on improved allowances, which NARD says the government now plans to discontinue, undermining trust and prior commitments.
“We demand the reversal of the decision to cease the implementation of the PAT… There must be immediate payment of promotion arrears and salary arrears,” Ibrahim said.
He also called for unity among members, stating, “The NARD leadership calls on its members to unite in the fight against this injustice,” as the strike threatens to disrupt services in public hospitals.
