In the wake of worsening insecurity across Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger states, the senate has advised the federal government to review Nigeria’s firearm laws to allow for responsible citizens to own guns for self protection.
Senators also argued that Nigeria’s firearm regulations should be updated to reflect current security realities, noting that over 175 countries allow responsible citizens to legally own firearms.
Deputy senate leader Lola Ashiru had raised the motion on recent attacks including St Mary’s catholic school in Niger, Kwara church attack, Kebbi schoolgirls kidnapping and more.
Lawmakers warned that mass abductions and repeated raids have forced the closure of all 47 unity schools, disrupting learning for thousands of students.
They commended President Bola Tinubu for cancelling foreign engagements to coordinate security operations, which resulted in the rescue of 38 abductees in Kwara and 51 students in Niger.
The Senate called for urgent federal intervention and urged communities to remain vigilant, support security agencies, and resist internal collaborators.
