The Senate has said that no new state will be created unless it goes through a constitutional review process involving Nigerians and key stakeholders.
Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu stated this while addressing journalists in Ilawe Ekiti, saying that 61 proposals for state creation have been received from different parts of the country.
He explained that the National Assembly cannot create states on its own, as the process requires reviewing demographic, geographic and historical data, as well as public hearings where both supporters and opponents of the proposals can present their views.
He added that all requests will first be assessed by the constitutional review committee before any decision is made.
“State creation is a serious matter that requires auditing demographic, geographic and historical data. In some cases, even elements within the requesting states do not fully support the proposals.
“All these factors must be considered. Until then, the national assembly, not just the senate, cannot recommend any state for creation.
“As it stands, no state has been recommended or suggested.”
