Southampton 1-1 Man Utd: james stunner not enough as red devils drop points again

Manchester United had to settle for a point against Southampton, as Jannik Vestergaard’s second-half header handed Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men a share of the spoils at St Mary’s.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were looking to bounce back after last weekend’s home loss to Crystal Palace, and took a first-half lead through Daniel James’ outstanding early strike.

The Welsh international fired into the top corner, leaving Angus Gunn with no chance, after 10 minutes.

United should have extended their lead before the break, but failed to make the most of their opporunities.

And 13 minutes into the second half they were punished, as Vestergaard powered home a close-range header.

Kevin Danso, who provided the cross for the equaliser on his home debut, was sent off in the 73rd minute for a reckless challenge on Scott McTominay, Mike Dean showing a second yellow card.

United couldn’t really raise themselves against 10 men however, and while Mason Greenwood, the 17-year-old substitute, went close, they failed to make their numerical advantage count.
