The Abia State Government has started paying compensation to former staff of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, who were dismissed between 2018 and 2022.
So far, 249 people have received their payments.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said this during a press briefing, explaining that the list of beneficiaries was inherited from the previous administration and the current government is simply fulfilling a promise.
Meanwhile, Governor Alex Otti has given $5,000 to 15-year-old Grace John Nkpa, an Abia-born student who recently won the 2025 TechGirls competition.
She will be representing the state in the United States.
The Governor commended her during a visit and praised her as a symbol of the rising quality of education in Abia.
The state government has also vowed to crack down on cultism and other criminal activities.
Security agencies have been instructed to deal firmly with anyone disturbing the peace in the state.
In addition, the government has begun major renovation works at the Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu.
Buildings being renovated include the library, vocational education block, auditorium, hostels, and the School of Technical Education.
Commissioner Kanu said all these efforts reflect the government’s ongoing commitment to education, staff welfare, and public safety.
