Hon. Alfred Berger has been sworn in as the new Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly.
Dockaysworld reports that he takes over from Hon. Aondona Dajoh, who resigned from the position.
Berger represents Makurdi North Constituency and was officially sworn in during an emergency plenary session led by Deputy Speaker Hon. Lami Ogenyi.
Berger assured lawmakers that his leadership would focus on unity, cooperation, and advancing the development of the state.
He said he plans to work closely with Governor Hyacinth Alia, his colleagues, and the people of Benue to ensure the House functions effectively and fulfills its legislative responsibilities.
The election followed the lifting of suspensions on Berger and three other members last Friday.
The suspensions had been related to an alleged attempt to unseat Dajoh.
The House temporarily adjusted its rules to enable the prompt election of a new Speaker.
Dajoh, in his resignation letter dated August 24, 2025, said stepping down was in the best interest of the state.
He affirmed his commitment to continue serving his constituency, Gboko West, and carrying out his legislative duties.
Previously serving as the House spokesperson, Berger said he would prioritize reconciliation and teamwork.
He acknowledged past conflicts but insisted they should not prevent progress in legislative work.
Governor Alia, through his Chief Press Secretary Tersoo Kula, stated that the leadership change was an internal matter for the assembly and not influenced by the government.
