Sultan of Sokoto gives directive to Muslims

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has directed Muslims across Nigeria to watch out for the new moon on Saturday, August 23, 2025, which is the 29th day of Safar 1447 AH.

This sighting will mark the beginning of Rabi’ul Awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar, celebrated as the month of Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) birth.

The directive came through the Sultanate Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, chaired by Prof. Sambo Junaidu, the Wazirin Sokoto.

Muslims are asked to report any sighting of the moon to their local District or Village Head, who will communicate the information to the Sultan.

The council explained that active participation in this moon sighting is necessary to determine the official start of Rabi’ul Awwal.

Prof. Junaidu also prayed for Allah’s guidance for everyone involved in fulfilling this religious responsibility.

If the moon sighting on Saturday confirms the start of Rabi’ul Awwal, the Federal Government is expected to declare Friday, September 5 as public holiday to mark the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday (Mawlid).
