Federal lawmaker Jafaru Mohammad Ali Damisa escaped an assassination attempt on Tuesday after his convoy was ambushed by gunmen suspected to be terrorists.
The attack took place along the Lumma–Babanna road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
Damisa, who represents Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, was on his way to Babanna for an official duty when the gunmen opened fire on his convoy.
The assailants, believed to be members of a terrorist group locally known as bandits, launched the attack in the afternoon, catching the security team by surprise.
His escorts quickly engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle that left one soldier dead and several others injured.
Some of Damisa’s political supporters also sustained injuries, while many vehicles in the convoy were damaged by bullets.
Witnesses said the attackers shot continuously before fleeing into the bush.
At least eleven vehicles were badly damaged during the assault, but the lawmaker managed to escape without injury.
Security operatives later cleared the scene and began investigations into the incident.
