A fresh terrorist attack has led to the kidnapping of numerous students and staff of St. Mary’s Catholic school in Niger state.
According to Daily Trust, an unconfirmed number of students and staff were taken frok Catholic institution in Papiri community, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.
The gunmen reportedly invaded the school between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. A source from one of the Catholic churches in Niger State confirmed the incident, saying the school was still compiling its records.
“Yes, it is true, but I am not in a position to give details. The church will issue an official statement later in the day,” he told Daily Trust.
The Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said updates would be provided when available.
Meanwhile, the Head of Department, Disaster and Relief in Agwara LGA, Ahmed Abdullahi Rofia, confirmed the attack and noted that the exact number of abductees had not been ascertained.
This latest incident adds to a troubling surge in violent attacks. Just a few days ago, 25 Kebbi schoolgirls were kidnapped and calls for their release are yet to yield results.
In Kwara State, a church was attacked recently, leaving sole worshippers dead and others kidnapped. The assailants have since demanded a 3.8 billion naira ransom in exchange for their lives.
