Terrorists Threaten To Bomb National Assembly
Terrorists have reportedly issued threats to bomb the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, raising tension among lawmakers and staff.
The warning was revealed by the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security, Garba Ibrahim Muhammad, during a public hearing on a bill aimed at improving security within the National Assembly.
The hearing, held on Tuesday at the National Assembly, focused on a proposed law seeking to create a Legislative Security Directorate that will strengthen protection for lawmakers, employees, and visitors.
Garba said the threats also included plans by some protesters to shut down the complex.
He explained that the National Assembly, which represents the core of Nigeria’s democracy, has faced growing security concerns such as vandalism, theft of cars and motorcycles, infiltration by unregistered individuals, and the use of fake identification cards.
Garba warned that if these challenges are not properly addressed, the situation could disrupt legislative operations, affect the passage of budgets, halt plenary sessions, and weaken democratic governance across the country.
According to him, the proposed bill is designed to provide a coordinated system for security management, combining different strategies to ensure safety within the parliament.
He noted that while the National Assembly must remain open to the public, security must not be compromised.
The proposed law, titled A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Establishment and Functions of the Legislative Security Directorate in the National Assembly (HB 1632), seeks to create a structure that will introduce modern security practices in line with global standards.
Garba also called on state Houses of Assembly across Nigeria to adopt similar measures to strengthen the safety of lawmakers and legislative institutions nationwide.
