President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of the Federal University of Science and Technology in Epe, Lagos State.
The development was made known during Thursday’s plenary session when Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced that the President had signed the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe (Establishment) Bill, 2025, into law.
The President’s assent followed the Senate’s transmission of the authenticated version of the bill to the Presidency.
Two certified copies of the signed document have been returned to the National Assembly, confirming the institution’s legal establishment.
The newly approved university will focus on science and technology-based disciplines to support national development and innovation.
Courses to be offered include Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, and Civil Engineering, as well as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science.
The goal is to strengthen Nigeria’s technological capacity and contribute to its growing digital economy.
The approval comes a few months after the Federal Executive Council, led by President Tinubu, introduced a seven-year moratorium on the creation of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Despite the moratorium, the new institution was considered a special case due to its potential to boost technical education and innovation in Lagos State and beyond.
