A member of the House of Representatives, Obi Aguocha, has urged President Bola Tinubu to dissolve and reconstitute the newly formed Presidential Committee on Population and Housing Census.
His concern stems from the complete absence of representatives from the South-East region in the committee, which he believes undermines the fairness and credibility of the upcoming census.
Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in Abia State, stated that a flawed process will only lead to flawed results, no matter how well-intentioned the exercise may be.
He insisted that a truly credible census must begin with inclusivity and fairness, urging the president to ensure the committee reflects the federal character principle.
The original eight-member committee, inaugurated on 16th April 2025 by the President’s Chief of Staff, includes top government officials but none from the South-East.
Nigeria’s last census was held in 2006 and drew heavy criticism over its accuracy and execution.
