President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦2 billion for rebuilding homes destroyed by recent floods in Mokwa, Niger State.
The Vice President, Kashim Shettima, revealed this during a visit to the affected community on Wednesday.
He said the President sent him personally to console the people of Mokwa and to assure them that their concerns will be addressed in partnership with the Niger State government.
Shettima announced that Tinubu also instructed the Ministers of Environment and State for Agriculture to move to Niger State immediately to assist with drainage and other urgent matters under the ACRSAL project.
Additionally, 20 trucks filled with food supplies have been approved for distribution to those directly impacted, with help from the village head of Mokwa.
The Vice President praised the swift response from the Deputy Governor of Niger and the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
In his own remarks, Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba thanked NEMA but stressed the need for quick intervention, especially to fix four collapsed bridges that have cut off communities like Rabba.
He noted that students are struggling to attend school due to the damaged roads.
Over 2,000 homes were destroyed, and many victims are now staying with others.
Garba added that the state has land available for resettling the victims if needed.
The traditional ruler of the area, Etsu Nupe Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, urged the federal government to step in on several stalled road projects, including the Mokwa bypass and roads connecting Bida, Patigi, and Kaduna.
He also asked for an ecological team to be deployed to address environmental issues in the region.
Meanwhile, the Village Head of Mokwa, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, expressed gratitude to the federal government for standing by the community during this crisis.
