President Bola Tinubu has described the late former President Muhammadu Buhari as a very stubborn leader.
He recalled their disagreements during the early days of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The President shared the memories on Tuesday while receiving members of The Buhari Organisation, led by former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu said their clash in 2013 showed the differences in their political styles as they worked on merging parties.
He explained that they had several arguments, including over the party symbol.
Buhari wanted a parliament symbol, while Tinubu preferred a broom.
Despite their clashes, both leaders made compromises, allowing the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to merge successfully.
“We disagreed to agree. We even argued about a symbol. He (Buhari) insisted on parliament, and I insisted on broom. He’s so stubborn,” Tinubu recounted, drawing laughter from the audience.
The APC was officially registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2013, adopting the broom as its symbol.
The merger paved the way for the APC to win the 2015 elections, ending the 16-year rule of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Leaders present at Tuesday’s meeting included Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda and former Governor Aminu Masari.
Buhari, who served two terms after the APC’s rise to power, passed away in July 2025 in London.
