Tinubu sacks govt official, appoints replacement

President Bola Tinubu has sacked Nkiruka Madueke as Director General of the National Council on Climate Change.

He appointed Omotenioye Majekodunmi as replacement.

Madueke who took over the role in June 2024 also served as the Council’s Financial Adviser.

Her removal comes just weeks after criticisms from climate advocates and ministry officials who accused her of sidelining stakeholders during the 62nd UN climate talks in Germany.

Some accused her of withholding accreditations, thereby limiting Nigeria’s representation at the event.

Although no official reason was given for her removal, insiders say the decision was unexpected, with reports indicating she was still actively working on the day of her dismissal.

Her exit follows a pattern, as she becomes the second NCCC Director General to be removed before completing the four-year term provided by the Climate Change Act, signed into law in 2021.

Her predecessor, Salisu Dahiru, was also removed in less than two years.
