President Bola Tinubu has signed into law three bills seeking to establish new higher institutions in the Southeast.
The bills, which were proposed by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, will see to the creation of the Federal College of Education in Bende, Abia State; the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences also in Bende; and the Federal University in Okigwe, Imo State.
The announcement was made in Abuja by the Deputy Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, who explained that the College of Education in Bende will offer a range of full-time courses including science, arts, humanities, management, and technology.
It will also take part in research, train teachers, and manage the academic and disciplinary systems through appointed staff.
The new University of Medical and Health Sciences will provide education in various health-related fields.
It will offer undergraduate and graduate programmes and will also carry out medical research that focuses on improving healthcare and training future health professionals.
The Federal University in Okigwe, Imo State, will also offer learning and research opportunities for students in the region.
The institutions are expected to help meet the growing educational needs in the Southeast, making learning more accessible to people in the area.
Benjamin Kalu expressed his appreciation to the President for signing the bills and thanked his fellow lawmakers and Nigerians for their support.
He urged residents in the Southeast to continue backing the current administration as more projects are expected to come.
