Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani has been appointed as the Vice Chairman of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for 2025.
The announcement came on Tuesday, following his endorsement by President Bola Tinubu.
The ITU Council, made up of 48 member countries, directs the work of the United Nations agency responsible for global communication and digital technology matters.
This is the first time in nearly five decades that Nigeria is taking up a leadership role in the Council.
Dr. Tijani’s new position gives Nigeria a voice in global discussions on digital access, internet safety, and inclusion.
As Vice Chair, he will work with the Council to shape decisions that affect digital infrastructure and equal access to technology across the world.
His appointment is in line with Nigeria’s push for digital growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said Nigeria will focus on building strong digital systems, improving access for underserved areas, and boosting digital skills among young people.
Through this role, he is expected to support worldwide cooperation on digital development while also pushing Nigeria’s own agenda of improving digital literacy and creating safer online spaces.
The ITU Secretary-General said the Council is expected to help close the gap for the 2.6 billion people who still lack internet access.
