A member of President Tinubu’s cabinet, Wale Edun, who is the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, has reportedly been flown abroad for urgent medical treatment after suffering a stroke.
According to a report by Sahara Reporters, Edun’s condition is said to be serious, and he is currently receiving intensive medical care overseas. A senior government source cited in the report revealed that the minister suffered severe paralysis as a result of the stroke.
“It’s very serious. He may survive, but he won’t be able to return to work,” the source said, adding that President Bola Tinubu has begun consultations to identify a possible replacement due to Edun’s health condition.
The report further suggested that the minister’s illness may be linked to exhaustion and stress arising from his demanding workload and the pressure of managing the country’s ongoing economic and foreign exchange challenges.
The source noted that some senior officials work with little rest, irregular meals, and minimal sleep, which could have contributed to his condition.
Security contacts also reportedly confirmed Edun’s health situation, describing him as “extremely ill.”
The presidency has seemingly confirmed that the minister is sick, though it did not confirm the severity of the issue. On Sunday night, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed that the minister was indisposed.
He disclosed this while announcing that that Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., which begin Monday, October 13.
“Cardoso, as the alternate governor, replaces the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, who is indisposed,” the statement said.
