The Lagos State Police have clarified the situation surrounding a viral video showing 89 young men from Katsina State arriving in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.
Concerns had been raised on social media after the group was seen in front of a company called Dano, with some users questioning their identity and purpose.
According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, officers were quickly dispatched to the scene on May 14, 2025.
Upon investigation, they found that the men had been recruited to work as labourers at the Dangote Refinery.
A contractor associated with the refinery told police he personally arranged their relocation from Katsina for legal employment.
This claim was confirmed by the refinery’s Chief Security Officer, who verified the workers’ identities and confirmed they had been cleared to access the refinery premises.
The police reported that all 89 men were searched and found to be in possession of valid identification, including their National Identification Numbers (NINs), which were verified by authorities. No illegal items were discovered.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urged the public not to spread unverified or misleading information and emphasised the importance of maintaining calm and public order.
He assured that the police remain committed to public safety and will continue to respond swiftly to any security concerns.
The video had initially sparked mixed reactions online.
Some users expressed worry about the large group arriving without apparent identification, while others pointed out that there is nothing wrong with people travelling across states in search of work, as long as no illegal activities are involved.
