U.S. President Donald Trump has announced what he described as a “historic and unprecedented” peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, marking the first major breakthrough in years of conflict between the two sides.
In a statement released Wednesday via his truth social page, Trump said both parties had signed off on the first phase of a peace plan that includes the release of all remaining hostages and a withdrawal of Israeli troops to an agreed line.
“I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan. This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace,” Trump said.
He added that mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey played key roles in brokering the deal. “This is a GREAT Day for the Arab and Muslim World, Israel, all surrounding Nations, and the United States of America… BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS!” he wrote.
According to details emerging from the agreement, Hamas is expected to release all living hostages this Saturday, while the formal ceasefire agreement will be signed in Cairo on Thursday at 12 p.m. local time.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the development as “a great day for Israel,” adding that he would convene the cabinet on Thursday to approve the agreement.
Trump and Netanyahu reportedly spoke by phone to congratulate each other on the deal. Israeli media also report that Trump is expected to visit Israel soon and address the Knesset as part of the peace effort.
The agreement marks the most significant diplomatic breakthrough in the Israel-Hamas conflict since the start of the latest war, raising cautious optimism for a sustained peace in the region.
