Uyo Anglican Bishop Dies After Brief Illness
The Anglican Bishop of Uyo Diocese, Rt. Rev. Owen Amos Ukafia, has died after a brief illness.
His death was announced on Wednesday by the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) during the conclusion of a consecration and presentation service.
The Primate of the Church, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, made the news public while leading members of the church in a moment of silence in honour of the late cleric.
He also asked that prayers be offered for the bishop’s family as they mourn.
Ukafia, born on December 5, 1962, in Okoroete, Eastern Obolo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, began his clerical journey in 1994 when he was ordained a Deacon by Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Nglass, then Bishop of Uyo.
He became a priest the following year and went on to serve as Vicar of St. John the Baptist Church, Ikot Ekpene.
In 2002, he was made a Canon, and in 2006, an Archdeacon.
His rise in the church reached its peak when he was elected Bishop of Uyo on February 8, 2024, and consecrated on March 19 of the same year at the Cathedral Church of Our Saviour, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
The Communications Officer of the Church, Korede Akintunde, said details of the burial arrangements will be released to the public soon.
