We gave singer Ifunanya anti venom – Abuja hospital reacts

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, has reacted to the death of popular singer and vocalist Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, aka Nanyah, saying that, contrary to some reports, she was given anti-snake venom and other emergency treatment before she died.

In a statement signed by Dr. Bioku Muftau, Head of Clinical Service, Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, the hospital emphasised that its staff acted with professionalism and remains committed to transparency and quality patient care.

In the statement seen by Dockaysworld, the hospital said the singer died from severe neurotoxic complications resulting from a snake bite she sustained on January 31.

The medical team was said to have acted promptly, providing resuscitation, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and administering a polyvalent snake antivenom.

According to the hospital, doctors observed that her condition was critical due to the neurotoxic effects of the venom. Plans were made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for further management, but she suffered a sudden deterioration shortly before the transfer.

The hospital said immediate CPR and other life-saving measures were carried out, but she could not be revived.

The management of FMC, Jabi, also dismissed claims circulating on social media alleging the non-availability of anti-snake venom or inadequate response, describing them as unfounded.

Recall Dockaysworld reported that the singer, known as @nanyah_music, died after a snake bite in her home and rushed to hospital, with videos later emerging of neighbours displaying the dead snake allegedly responsible for her death.

Following her death, her home had been searched by experts who discovered another cobra.

This has since led to an out calling for better emergency services and anti venom availability in the country.
