Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, has issued a stern response to former U.S. President Donald Trump over his recent remarks on Nigeria, declaring that the country “is not afraid” of him.
Speaking on Thursday evening during a visit to the APC Youth House in Abuja, Jibrin described Trump’s comments as “unacceptable” and demanded that he retract them and apologize to Nigerians.
Jbrin said this while addressing questions from the younger members of the ruling party.
The Deputy Senate President accused Trump of violating international norms by making reckless comments about Nigeria’s internal affairs.
He insisted that the former American leader should have followed due diplomatic process instead of issuing threats.
Barau added that he was not intimidated by Trump’s influence and would confront him directly if given the opportunity.
“He is in violation of international laws, and I’ll tell him the truth even in person,” Jibrin stated.
His remarks come in reaction to Trump’s recent comments in which he threatened possible military intervention in Nigeria over what he called “a Christian genocide.”
Trump had also announced the redesignation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” in matters of religious freedom.
Recall that the senator had gotten into a mild argument with senate president Godswill Akpabio who had shied away from commenting on the matter.
Barau had told the senate president that he had every right to speak to Trump as he was a bonafide citizen of Nigeria, stating that he should be courageous.
