Deji Adeyanju, the lawyer representing popular activist and social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has revealed the challenges in securing his client’s bail, raising concerns that he may remain in detention longer than anticipated.
Despite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirming that VeryDarkMan had been granted administrative bail, his release remains stalled.
According to the EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, Otse is being held pending the fulfilment of stringent bail conditions.
He was taken into custody following multiple petitions accusing him of serious financial crimes and for allegedly ignoring repeated invitations for questioning.
The EFCC stated that it had secured a valid remand order and added that the arrest was lawful, dismissing claims that it was retaliatory over VeryDarkMan’s outspoken criticism of the agency on social media.
Oyewale added that while his comments were noted, they did not influence the arrest, which stemmed solely from the gravity of the financial allegations.
However, Adeyanju disclosed via his social media platforms that the legal team has faced repeated obstacles in obtaining the official bail documents, a delay which could prolong VeryDarkMan’s detention.
“The bail granted so far appears to be mere lip service,” Adeyanju stated.
He stated that despite public announcements of bail, no tangible documents have been received from the commission.
