The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has seized control of the party’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Abuja.
Amid the deepening internal rift, the group appointed Muhammed Abdulrahman as acting national chairman.
This development followed the suspension of National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and other Wike loyalists by the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Umar Damagum.
In retaliation, the Wike camp announced the suspension of Damagum and other key officials, replacing him with Abdulrahman.
Addressing reporters at the PDP’s FCT office on Monday, Abdulrahman decried the party’s decline since losing power in 2015 and vowed to unite its fractured ranks.
He said his focus would be on reconciling aggrieved members and restoring discipline within the party.
Abdulrahman later proceeded to the national secretariat to meet supporters, as police operatives deployed to prevent clashes between rival factions.
At least 10 patrol vehicles were seen stationed around the premises while Abdulrahman held his first meeting with Samuel Anyanwu and other allies.
