Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has announced plans to contest the Kogi Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
The declaration positions Bello for a potential contest against the incumbent senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Bello made the announcement during a visit to the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, where he met traditional rulers and stakeholders from the district.
A video shared on his verified Facebook page showed Bello formally accepting calls to run for the Senate.
“I accept to run for the Senate in 2027,” Bello said at the gathering.
Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo attended the event alongside other political and community leaders.
Ododo urged Bello to accept the request of party leaders and constituents to represent Kogi Central at the National Assembly.
Bello, who governed Kogi State from 2016 to 2024, remains a key figure in the All Progressives Congress in the state.
Akpoti-Uduaghan made history as the first woman to represent the district in the Senate and has had a long running political tussle with the former governor.
While Bello eyes the senatorial seat, Akpoti-Uduaghan has also been speculated to consider a run for the position of Kogi state Governor. She remains tight lipped about her potential plans.
