In recent weeks, there’s been some concern in Lagos as its recorded the deaths of four female elected officials, all within weeks of assuming office.
On July 27, 2025, newly elected chairmen, vice chairmen, and councillors were sworn in across the state. In just under two months since then, four of the women among them have passed away under different circumstances.
They include:
1. Oluwakemi Rufai: Councillor representing Ward C, Ibeju-Lekki, who died on August 13, only 17 days after taking office. She was the sole female member of her legislative council and reportedly died after a brief illness.
2. Zainab Shotayo: Councillor for Ward C3 in Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA and Chief Whip of the 6th Legislative Arm, passed on August 18, just 22 days after inauguration. She was the only woman elected in her council.
3. Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose: Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA and daughter of Oba Oyekan Possi Ajose, the Alapa of Apa Egun-Awori Kingdom, died on September 20—55 days after she was sworn in.
4. Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan: Councillor for Ward F in Shomolu, died September 21, just a day later, barely two months after beginning her tenure in the 10th Legislative Arm.
Amid growing speculation, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed any claims of political undertones behind the deaths.
Party spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, described such insinuations as insensitive and baseless, urging the public to avoid spreading misinformation. He further noted that the party continues to prioritize the inclusion of women in political leadership across Lagos.
