Edo LG chairmen impeached, forced to resign

A political crisis has unfolded across Edo State’s 18 local government areas as the acting chairmen were either impeached or forced to resign.

The development followed the presentation of Certificates of Return to 63 newly elected councillors by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) on Monday, September 22, 2025.

These councillors had won a by-election held the previous Saturday.

Reports indicate that councillors in several local government areas signed impeachment notices against acting chairmen before returning to their offices.

In Esan West, the acting chairman, Godsent Agboibo, resigned on the same day to avoid possible removal, citing recent events as the reason for his decision.

In Estako East, councillors signed an impeachment notice for acting chairman Solomon Ogumah, while thugs reportedly took control of the local government secretariat in Okpella.

Similarly, in Uhunmwode, nine councillors removed acting chairman Osas Iradia Benjamin, citing abuse of office, financial mismanagement, and disobedience to authorities as reasons for his dismissal.

The removal of acting chairmen has sparked warnings from party members about potential instability within the state’s APC.
