President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a pay rise for the country’s military personnel.
The President made the announcement at a breaking of fast dinner with Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where military and political leaders came together for an interfaith Ramadan gathering.
Tinubu used the occasion to thank soldiers for their sacrifices, promising that housing and welfare issues facing military families would be a top priority for his government.
“My duty is to thank all of you on behalf of a grateful nation, knowing fully well that many times you are without your families, some are facing attacks from banditry and terrorists,” he said.
The President acknowledged the difficulties that come with military service, telling those gathered that their hardships would not go unrecognised.
“This nation will always be grateful to you and your sufferings will not be in vain, I can assure you,” he said.
Tinubu also praised the leadership of the Armed Forces for their efforts in keeping the country safe, and made a firm commitment to improving conditions for troops and their families.
“Your welfare, accommodation and many other opportunities that should be extended to your families will take first priority in our decisions,” he said.
The interfaith nature of the gathering was also highlighted by the President, who said it reflected Nigeria’s diversity.
“We reflect our diversity, which is the hallmark of progress and solidarity of our country,” he added.
