The All Progressives Congress has accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of inciting violence following remarks he made at a summit of opposition parties in Ibadan.
In a statement signed by Felix Morka, the APC described Makinde’s comments as reckless and a threat to national security, alleging that he invoked the violent history of “Operation Wetie” to provoke unrest.
Recall that Dockaysworld reported that the opposition parties had resolved to field one presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
The party said, “Makinde’s violent rhetoric cannot be dismissed as mere opposition posturing,” warning that “his statement risks fueling anarchy, murderous rage and widespread lawlessness capable of undermining national stability.”
It added that it was particularly disturbing for a sitting governor, who serves as chief security officer of his state, to reference such a dark period in Nigeria’s political history in his remarks.
The APC called on security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously, stressing the need to safeguard lives, property, and the country’s democratic order.
The statement also noted that constitutional immunity does not shield public officials from accountability in matters affecting national security, adding that no individual should endanger the lives of citizens under the guise of political commentary.
The party further rejected claims by opposition figures that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state, attributing the challenges within opposition parties to internal crises, leadership struggles, and factional disputes.
According to the APC, opposition leaders have failed to present a credible alternative vision for governance, relying instead on what it described as fear-driven narratives.
The ruling party reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that it remains focused on governance and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
